Step 1
Contact ABOS to arrange an informal discussion about Specialty Board Membership. This is a good time to ask any questions not answered in Criteria for Optometry Specialty Board Membership.
If practical, ABOS will arrange personal interviews and discussions with interested groups at the time and place of an annual optometry meeting such as the American Academy of Optometry.
Step 2
If invited to apply for Membership, the applicant shall electronically send their request for membership.
The request for membership should affirm the Specialty Board’s compliance with ABOS Membership Criteria or their plan and timetable to bring the Specialty Board into compliance. The specialty may be a blend, mixture or concentration of one or more ASCO listed residencies but preferably have a major emphasis within one of the 11 ASCO listed residencies.
Step 3
The applicant Specialty Board shall seek and provide to ABOS the comments of any appropriate optometry agency or group that supports or opposes applicant’s request.
Step 4
Pay a one-time application fee.
Step 5
ABOS will review the application and report the results.
- An initial review will be conducted by ABOS within 60 days and reported to the applicant.
- An applicant’s request for membership will be affirmed or denied within 5 months of receipt.
- If rejected, an applicant will have a 3 month period in which to submit additional data and information for reconsideration by ABOS.
