Step 1 – Informal Discussion and Q&A
Contact ABOS to arrange an informal discussion about Specialty Board Membership. This is a good time to ask any questions not answered in Criteria for Optometry Specialty Board Membership.
If practical, ABOS will arrange discussions with interested individuals and groups at the time and place of an annual optometry meeting such as the American Academy of Optometry.
Step 2 – Formally Request Membership
The formal request for membership should affirm the Specialty Board’s compliance with current ABOS Membership Criteria and/or the plan and timetable to bring the Specialty Board into compliance. The specialty should have a major emphasis within one of the ASCO listed residencies.
Step 3 – Recommendations and Public Support
The applicant Specialty Board shall seek out and provide to ABOS the comments of any appropriate optometry agency or group that supports or opposes applicant’s request.
Step 5 – Application Review and Commentary
- An initial application review will be conducted by ABOS within 3 months. Preliminary results will be reported to the applicant Board.
- If more information is needed, an applicant Board will be granted a 3 month extension in which to submit the information or provide a clear timetable for doing so.
- If rejected, an applicant Board will have 3 months to appeal the decision.
- If accepted, ABOS and the new Board will begin the onboarding process.
